A decade ago, during my tertiary vacation periods, I spent my time working a few part time jobs to earn extra cash and to gain some work experience. I remember I used to work in a company as a part time Data Processor cum Marketer. How did I get this part time job? Alright guys, honestly, I just called the company and hand delivered my resume to them. On the day itself, I was called in for an interview and got hired on the spot. I felt so fortunate to be given an opportunity to work for a great company.
I still vividly remember the first day I stepped into the office. I broke out in cold sweat, my heart pumped real fast and I had butterflies in my stomach. Honestly, I was on the brink of a nervous breakdown. I was so scared that I couldn't accomplish any task given to me. I was also terrified to talk to the people in the office. I thought they will treat me harshly, but I was proven wrong. My former manager and colleagues treated me as an equal professional and with respect. They never treated me like a small potato. Whenever I needed help, they were always there to lend me a hand without complaining. I was so fortunate to have had a wonderful working relationship with great people.
My former manager was the best mentor ever! He helped me formulate compelling solutions to overcome work challenges, and taught me not to be afraid to learn from our mistakes. I also learnt a lot from him about professional work culture and how to interact with individuals from different levels of management inside and outside the company. In addition, I have gained a great deal of knowledge, skills and self-confidence that add value to my professional development throughout my career. It was a valuable learning experience for me indeed.
In my humble opinion, based on my internship experience, it's important that students/young people have internship/part time job experiences to help them develop professional skills and prepare them for their future careers. Therefore, I strongly encourage students/young people to get an internship or do a part time job during their vacation breaks.
